It Was Good Enough For Shakespeare!
One of the core conflicts for originative artists of all sorts is the tug-of-war between fine & commerce. Frankly, an originative person wants to make money, & it is preferable to make it from his craft.
A author who must labor a full-time job to support himself will struggle to find the time to work, & often eventually supplies it up altogether. On the else hand, being capable to compose on any project at all may polish valuable skills, & teach one the dominates of the publishing industry.
On the else hand, Ive met writers who were distinctly working on projects, or toiling distant at a career, that was burning out their souls. I remember assembling one such writer. His job card read freelance hack & literary mechanic. Sadly, but not exclusively unexpectedly, he was deathlike of alcoholism within a year.
How to nullify such burnout? Well, in my personal career, in accession composeing the books I worried about the most, Ive printed Batman comic books, a Star Trek novel, & a Star Wars tie-in. In my TV career, in accession to composeing for Outer Limits & The Twilight Zone, I as well published four episodes of Baywatch(!)
And never for a moment did I sense that I was tradeing myself out. Lets get anything straight: Shakespeare published for money. One may keep a calculating eyeball on the camber account, & still achieve the heights of craft. But again, how?
In my personal case, the reply is reasonably simple. Envision the conveived procedure like this: I draw 2 circles. In the first, is everything I would like to compose (and there are all of the time dozens of projects in the mental hopper!). In the 2nd is everything someone else is willing to pay me for. Where the 2 circles overlap, I write. In else words, are there projects Id cherish to write, but cant get paid for? You bet, & I normally dont compose them unless they are rather short. And there are projects that producers or publishers might need me to do, but dont touch my heart at all. Having studied through undergo that there are limits to my originative flexibility, I turn those down.
But from time to time, an chance arises that is in the no-mans-land between the circles. There is money, but the project isnt precisely anything you have ever so so believed writing. What then?
Then, you call for yourself whenever the project is anything that you might be proud of. If you would read it, or respect someone who did. For instance, when my broker phoned & stated that the producers of Baywatch needed to speak to me, I had the office send over six hours of video on the show. I sat down on the living room sofa & saw them with my daughter, who was about six at the time. After a couple of episodes, I called for her what she thought. She liked it. I called for why. She said: Because its about nice folks working stiff to make the sands safe for us. I conveived about it, & then replied, you know? There are worse stuff than that in this world, by a long shot. And resolved to attempt composeing for it.
Every show, each project has its limitations. You must use certain characters, must get them into certain sorts of situations, & must nullify certain topics. That may be restrictive, but you may as well determine to take it as a challenge. After all, you might supply Fred Astaire a stage of any kind, & props of any kind, & he would find a path to produce dance. Should you be committed to a lesser layer of science & vision? No.
You must find styles to amuse yourself although writing, to stretch your skills by attempting anything youve never done before, by empathizing with a younger consultation whenever necessarynever ever so so composeing down to your audience. That is the decease of art. But whenever you may be truly flexible, youll find that more doors are open to you, more opportunities arise, that brass circlehosts comes around more often. A author set up to leap at any chance to exhibit his skill, & who finds it simple to autumn in cherish with about a project will often out-perform a brittle genius who must have everything precisely his path in order to write.
And whenever that approach is good plenty for the Bard, its good plenty for me.
