If you want to recognize how to compose poetry, the premier thing you have to do is compose some. It doesn’t subject how it turns out. Your personal mistakes will become your teachers. Your personal composeing will motivate you to bigger creativity. Now, once you start the process, how do you ameliorate it? Here are three tips.

1. Use nouns & verbs more than adjectives. Which is stronger: “She was as pretty as a flower…” or “Roses wilted in humiliate as she passed by…”? “He appeared at the demoralizing clouds…” or “He saw as darkish clouds moved in, covering his sky…”?

2. Do not say the subscriber how to feel. Let the words elicit the emotions directly, without explaining. “The tragedy touched them all,” is more touching to the subscriber as “Men & women, Dr. & workman… thirteen folks appeared upon the scene… with tears in their eyes.”

3. Use dramatic & affective words. Not all words are equivalent in their power to “grab” a subscriber or elicit emotion. “Fell,” “take,” & “love,” will likely be weaker than “plunged,” “siezed,” & “worship.”

Look at the following lines, printed 2 ways. The 2nd path applies the three dominates above. (From the verse form “Gratitude.”)

1.

The mountains & lakes were beautiful

I appeared at them, heard them & smelled them

And I felt in awe

2.

Mountains stand against the sky

My tiny lake at their feet

And in the center of this creation

Which I watch with my eyes

Hear with my ears

Smell & taste…

Words fail, as they should

I hope you concur that the 2nd version is better. Again, whenever you want to recognize how to compose poetry, you have to start writing. Use these & else dominates to aid you, but remember that all dominates in verse want to be broken at times. Read your poems aloud to yourself & others as a ultimate “test.”
