Two years ago, when my colleague, companion writer, Patricia Phillips, author of past novel, Last Bride Standing, (and others) came up with the thought of composeing an anthology together, I never understood the bottomless possibilities that could come from a script printed by three authors.

Later, when I approached the publisher with the thought of doing an anthology, he said, Anthologies dont do well, but, to his credit, (for which I am eternally grateful,) he bought the manuscript, in spite of his reluctance.

Although the publisher had reservations about purchasing the book, since that time, I conveive he has been cheerily surprised. For one, the anthology, today styled Secret Lovers, (by Patricia Phillips, Maxine Thompson, Michelle McGriff) not only was picked up as a Black Expressions Alternate Choice, within its premier calendar of release, it made their best sellers list. As numerous know, Black Expressions Book Club is huge. (One author I recognize has received more royalties from this script club with their stiff blanket productions than for her mass-market titles.)

At any rate, from what Ive seen since the June 6, 2006 acquittance of our anthology, Secret Lovers, this type of genre may be a boon for a self-published author or any writer, for that matter, as witnessed by the count of New York writers today composeing anthologies. (Consider Intimacy, Erotic Stories of Love, Lust & Marriage by Black Men Edited by Robert Fleming, with authors as diverse as Stephen Barnes to John Edgar Wideman.) Or who may blank out Terry McMillans Breaking Ice: An Anthology of Contemporary African-American Fiction & Clarence Major’s Calling the Wind: Twentieth Century African-American Short Stories?

So what is an anthology, you could ask? An anthology may be a compilation of a count of authors, such as Proverbs for the People (Kensington Books, 2003, which includes my wrote brief story, Valley of the Shadow) or Saturday morning (by the Saturday Morning Literary Workshop, of which I am a member) wrote below Black Butterfly Press, LLC. Or it may be three authors, such as upcoming acquittance All in the family, by Janice Sims, Melanie Schuster (BET Arabesque writers) & Maxine Thompson. In All in the Family, every author takes a another fellowship appendage of the four sisters & says her point of view. Whereas in Secret Lovers, every novella is different, but every tale shares a common theme of star-crossed lovers.

But, in the main, as a businessperson, (which numerous literary entrepreneurs are,) doing an anthology will supply you leverage. That is wherever you do the labor once & get paid over & over. Sometimes the pay will be in terms of on-going advert for your else books.

Not to mention, you will increase three or more another views of merchandising that will take place, plus the publishers broad distribution, which will aid get your name out in the public. Additionally, this will aid you build your platform as well as classify recognition, which are both intangibles that you cant evaluate enough. This may as well aid with subscribers recognizing your intellectual belongings & hopefully, you transaction with less copyright infringement.

Next, you will selection up the fans of the else participating authors. For instance, you may piggyback on previous successes of the else authors. For example, Black Expressions had already picked up Patricia Anne Phillips previous titles, June in Winter, Nice Wives Finish First & Last Bride Standing. This made it easier for Black Expressions to selection up her labor again.

Please note. In choosing authors for the anthology, dont underestimate a self-published writers talent, achieve & influence when youre placing conjointly a grouping of three or four writers. The 3rd author in Secret Lovers, Michelle McGriff, a prolific, multi-cultural writer, has a MySpace presence with a oversized mate network, & she has had an Iuniverse history since 1998. A count of studying groupings already followed her work. Her storylines are exciting, fresh & intriguing.

That being said, all of these formats assist to keep you on the slicing boundary of technology.

Also, having a platform such as Booking Matters Magazine, as well as else Internet articles, draws traffic to your websites, which interprets into script sales.

In Secret Lovers, we all have another composeing styles. But what do we three writers have in common? We all began out self-published.

So this is encouragement for else self-published writers. Team with writers with New York trotters of distribution, whenever possible. If everybody in the anthology is from a self-published background, team with writers with good merchandising savvy & talent.

-It cross promotes for every writer, sometimes even writers from another genres, introducing new voices to the public.
-Anthologies may be good merchandising tools, especially in favorite genres such as romance, skill fiction, mysteries.
-Anthologies may selection up else books sales for the participating authors. As a literary entrepreneur, this anthology has picked up my backlist sales for my else titles, The Ebony Tree, No Pockets in a Shroud, A Place Called Home, & others.

In conclusion, writers, kindly see your composeing career as a bridge. Each author may piggyback on the others writers success & readership in an anthology.

Try to compose with writers with another followings than yours & then see your readership grow!

Only one note of caution. Be willing to pull your weight when it comes to promotion & merchandising of the book. When you have a script signing, hand out the else writers bookmarkers or post cards.

Schedule individual, as well as grouping radio/podcasting/webcasting interviews. (Everyone benefits.) Do a publish mail/email campaign, as well as press acquittance blasts.
