Your Guide to Successful Writing and Speaking
Free Contests May Not Cost You Money, But They Can
Free Contests May Not Cost You Money, But They Can Still Cost You
If theres no entrance fee, wherefore not enter? If I dont win, I dont lose anything. Many a new author has been burned by believing this way. Free competitions might not price you any cash to enter, but they may still price you.
The Big Beware: Are You Selling Your Rights by Entering?
Beware of competitions that have no entrance fee but a statement telling they have the right to print your work, disregarding of whether or not you win. In many cases, these competitions as well take the copyright to your work. That means your tale is no longer yourswhether or not you win.
To nullify becoming burned, read the challenge guidelines & make sure there is no statement that states anything like all entries become the belongings of XXX or by entering, entrants grant permission for XXX to publish, edit, or trade the work.
Is Your Work Automatically Going to be Published?
Be calculating of free competitions wherever entries are automatically wrote online. If theyre wrote online, that means you cant trade them as premier rights anywhere else. Selling reprints isnt simple & you generally cant trade reprints for much.
For these competitions, your entrance may become your only chance to trade the story. In these cases, its often finer just to attempt & trade it to a market. At least then, you get more than one chance.
The BIG Prize Money
Some competitions that call for publishing rights to all entries have oversized prizes to draw in people. But whenever a lot of folks enter, that means your entrance will have to be beautiful good to win.
If you may compose a tale that will be finer than 2000 others, its rather possible you would be capable to trade it to a magazine for almost as practically as the award money. And that way, theres no chance to you.
And what whenever your tale is almost good plenty to win? You dont acquire & you chance a tale that you might likely trade somewhere else. Its not worth the chance for a chance at the huge prize.
Who is the Contest Benefiting?
Katrinas Story: When a Highly Commended is Your Loss
I was very upset when a tale I wrote got wrote on the web for no pay. It was wrote as one of the Highly Commended stories, with 2 reports wrote every monthnone for any pay. Looking at the challenge now, I conveive it was their path of becoming free content. The premier award succeeder got paid $200. Another 24 got paid nothing. The ezine got a years worth of subject matter for $200. I got none for it. Katrina, Creative Writer
Very couple of contests are run for only for the benefit of writers. But even whenever the organizer gets anything out of it, it still ought be fair-minded to writers. Think about what the organizer is increasing & call for yourself whenever theyre taking advantage of writers.
The Impact on You
The judging of free competitions isnt all of the time done so that the award goes to the best labor submitted. Some competitions are adjudicated by folks with no expertness in writing, many are adjudicated by one person who plainly picks their favorite, & many just selection a succeeder almost at random.
The trouble this may produce is that youre incoming competitions, not winning, & so assuming that youre not that fine of a writer. This happened to Angela & it almost made her supply up on writing.
I began incoming competitions as a path of testing to watch whenever I had any talent. I came in about 40, didnt acquire any, & was about to supply up writing. Then an experienced author encouraged me just to start submitting to magazines. Since then, I have traded over half of the pieces I came in in competitions. Angela, Poet & Writer
The lesson is to enter contests, but remember that even whenever the challenge is being adjudicated fairly, there is only one winner. Not winning does not mean that your labor is not good, or that your labor is not publishable. It just means that your entrance wasnt the total best according to the judges of that fastidious contest.
The Final Call
Competitions do bid a fine chance & may be a positive section of a composeing career. But earlier you enter, read the terms & think about what you have to lose. If the challenge terms are calling for too practically & handing too little, its time to move on & find a finer path to get your labor out there.
