Who Is The “Hero” In The “Hero’s Journey”?
During the recent thirty years, practically has been (rightfully) made of Joseph Campbells breakthrough explore in social anthropology, most splendidly wrote in The Hero With A Thousand Faces. In this book, Campbell examines the numerous social expressions of the heroic role model, & in doing so helped to found the universality of human hopes, dreams, & lives.
Hollywood, in particular, has embraced this vision, which powers dozens of films a year, & has become clichd wisdom in ontogenesis administrator suites all over Southern California. Of course, the doubt of the temper of heroes enters else arenas as well. In the governmental arena, shaping doctrine around solid leader figures is one path to promote ideas to the public. Heroic firefighters & soldiers appear in ads for one celebration or another, & our elected functionaries trumpet their military serviceor are criticized for their deficiency thereof, or are phoned cowards or even traitors whenever they disaccord with the plans or thoughts of an opponent.
Whether one wishings to comprehend the Heros Journey as a tool for fiction, or desires to rise above the rhetoric a bit, its useful to specify just precisely what a hero is. This is, after all, the human face of the story. If the Journey is important, even more so is the person taking it. If we, as a culture, lean to worship & abide by heroes, it is vital to have a definition of precisely what this is.
Of course, every of us ought search our personal hearts for the definitions that aid us guidebook our lives. With that understanding, Id like to present a definition that has worked for this author & citizen for numerous years.
A hero is a man or lady who holds to their deepest values, disregarding of the stress or pressures.
This applies to soldiers in combat, teachers in the inner city, moms sacrificing for their children, artists resisting commercial demands, adolescents resisting the call of drugs or alcoholic beverage or premature sexuality. It postulates that the Hero comprehend his or her deepest values, & often, the entire purpose of a tale is to force them to confront these deeper truths, stripping distant superfluous ego-identity.
Culturally, this means that a person of Heroic dimension doesnt necessarily share our point of view, our governmental beliefs, even our morality. To comprehend this is to comprehend how an apparent moral monster may be lionized by his followers. When we disaccord with a leader, & are forced to dehumanize him in order to justify our personal position, we dwindle our capacity to comprehend the human condition.
We must hold to our values, & be understandable about them. The entire world of advertisingwhether Madison Avenue is tradeing cereal or an unpopular waris based on anchoring many goal to fundamental human drives. Those who are uncertain of their values are like straws in the wind, blown by whoever plucks their strings. No wonder we esteem those who appear understandable & solid in their identity, who stand by their choices even below stress. No wonder we respect these men & women even as it becomes understandable that flexibility & settle could be the finer way. At least they think in SOMETHING!
If we are to grow on the far side sheep wanting a shepherd, we must be solid ourselves. We must recognize ourselves deeply & honestly, & find the bedrock of our personal morality. From this spot it is easiest to decide when a leader is truly creditable of emulation or admiration or obedience. When we walk this street of self-discovery, we become heroes ourselves, experiencing the trip of our personal lifetimes.
